Description

For those short on time and needing a break from the UK and wanting one of the world's greatest wildlife experiences or for those on safari in Kenya or Tanzania and wishing to add seeing the gorillas to their East African itinerary this is perfect excursion.

Rwanda is a small country and within 2.5h of arriving in the capital you can be in the north at Ruhengeri underneath the conical mountains of Volcanoes National Park. There is a lodge here that is well placed for the early morning gorilla trek the following day. You will be briefed by your guides about the group of gorillas you will track, their habitats and your conduct before you leave. There are currently around 7 habituated family groups of gorillas that may be tracked. A short drive usually brings you to the start of your walk up the hill and into the protected forest. You will be walking up to an altitude of 3000m although it is usually a little less than this. The walk should take at most 3h and again is usually less than this, it is steady and there is no rush and everyone is accommodated by the guides. An hour is spent in the company of the gorillas once they are located and it is a real privilege to be among them, very special moments.

Return down to your vehicles and head off for lunch. In the afternoon there is the chance to see a couple of very scenic lakes nearby. The following day there is the opportunity to track gorillas again or perhaps try and view golden monkeys before returning to Kigali for your departure flight.
