Description

Quesnel Lake, the deepest fjord lake on Earth, and its surrounding temperate rainforest, provides a unique eco-system for countless species to thrive and amongst them is the mighty Grizzly Bear.

From a comfortable base at Pyna-tee-ah Lodge, explore this huge mountain wilderness in the company of capable, knowledgeable guides and local experts, including Gary Zorn, the Cariboo Mountains very own ‘Bear Whisperer™’. His passion lies with the big bears - the grizzlies, and here you can follow them through the seasons, observing them in their wild and natural habitat.

Each season brings a different experience and a new perspective into the lives of the bears and other wildlife that inhabit this region. In spring when the snows melt away, new life emerges, and the bears awaken from their winter hibernation. Watch young cubs frolic with their mothers and juveniles as they find their way alone. During the summer, hike through lush mountain meadows and visit the bountiful berry patches where the bears binge on blueberries. With the splendour of autumn, the spawning salmon arrive and with them, the rush to the shores for the annual feast in preparation for the bears winter hibernation.

In addition to grizzlies, other native wildlife includes mountain goats, caribou, mule deer, moose, black bears and a host of smaller fur-bearers such as otters, beavers, lynx, wolf, wolverine, pine martens, chipmunks, squirrels and more – all untamed and undisturbed. Alongside the antics of the native wildlife you are likely to see many bird species including ducks, geese, blue herons, trumpeter swans, dippers, loons, whiskey jacks (gray jays), sapsuckers, woodpeckers, grouse and swifts.

4, 5 and 6-day packages are available and with each you are assured a comfortable and intimate stay combined with genuine Canadian hospitality. Hearty breakfasts, generous packed lunches and delicious home-cooked evening dinners are enjoyed in good company and full days are spend in the field experiencing the very best this mountain wilderness has to offer.

This adventure begins in Likely, BC, and can be easily included as part of a longer self-drive itinerary in Western Canada, originating in Alberta or British Columbia.
