This fascinating week in Slovenia will explore many of the diverse and interesting aspects of perhaps the world's most advanced beekeeping nation. Slovenians usually keep bees in specifically designed bee houses. Slovenia will delight in its heritage, culture, landscapes and cuisine and this tour for beekeepers and those interested in bees will give you a grand taste of it all.

Your first stop, just a short distance from Ljubljana airport, is at the Museum of Apiculture in Radovljica which covers the entire heritage of Slovenia's beekeeping, a perfect introduction to the week ahead. Lake Bled is your destination this evening where you will stay in a hotel or at a farm guesthouse.

There is time to relax this morning to walk beside the famous lake, visit the castle perched on the rock above the lake or perhaps take a 'pletna' traditional boat ride to the small island and the scenic Church of the Assumption. Later visit an experienced beekeeper for a first introduction to Carnolian bees, beekeeping, nectar producing plants of the region and bee products.

The following day you will visit Bohinj, the lake here lies among spectacular scenery surrounded by a great circle of rocky mountains that form the highest Julian Alps which are part of Triglav National Park. Rather than honey, delicious cheeses from the valley must be tasted. You will of course visit a beekeeper too, this one particularly famous for honey brandy!

A day is spent around the capital, there is time for a morning guided tour of Ljubjlana Old Town, meeting with some urban beekeepers before enjoying an evening traditional meal and Slovenian folk dancing.

Moving east from Ljubljana you will visit the Styria region and the historic town of Ptuj. You will a beekeeper that produces sparkling mead and gain an insight into making mead in processes similar to champagne production. This evening you can relax at a thermal spa resort.

Another day of contrasts lies ahead, from visiting a pumpkin seed oil mill to tasting some excellent Slovenian wines, interspersed with a visit to a professional beekeeper with over 600 hives. There is an opportunity to try apitherapy and the breathing of hive air whilst lying in a bee house.

From the traditional to the more modern, towards the end of the week you will visit a beekeeper who will introduce you to biodynamic beekeeping, learning about bee venom, Royal jelly, apitherapy and honey massage. A wonderful picnic lunch awaits at a beekeeping farm and herbal garden. Your last visit on the morning of departure will be to meet with the Slovenian Beekeepers Association that has had a major part to play in the wealth of Carnolian bees in Slovenia over the last 140 years.
