Brazil Wildlife Holidays

Brazil offers an immense wealth of nature across a wide range of habitats. The Pantanal is well known of course, particularly for jaguar sightings; but the country offers far more and to really get to know it requires either a long trip or multiple visits.

Consider the Amazon with over 1000 species of birds, pink river dolphins and endangered primates. The Mata Atlântica, or Atlantic rainforest, is also a haven for birds and yet more endangered primate species such as the golden-headed lion tamarin. Then there is the cerrado, one of the world's great savannahs where maned wolf roam. Finally, sandwiched between the forest and the cerrado and less well known is the caatinga, a biome unique to Brazil, cactus and low bush country in the north-eastern states.

Of course with a tropical coastline, numerous fabulous beaches, incredible Iguaçu Falls, plus colonial old towns and cities beyond famous Rio de Janeiro, there is a real mix of cultures to add character to your holiday in nature. You will not be disappointed and we look forward to showing you this beautiful country through our intelligently designed tailor-made wildlife holidays.

Brazil Wildlife & Birdwatching Holidays

Unsurprisingly, as the fifth largest country in the world Brazil dominates a map of South America. This tropical country, that is the most biodiverse in the world, holds impressive statistics among its biomes:

The world’s largest freshwater wetland, the Pantanal, floods seasonally and is home to jaguar, giant anteater plus many other iconic species.

62% of the 5.3million km2 Amazon rainforest is within the borders of Brazil.

The world’s most biodiverse savannah grasslands, the cerrado,  hold a staggering 5% of the world’s biodiversity including 837 bird species.

The coastal Mata Atlântica rainforest, ranging from sea level to 2700m is a hotspot for biodiversity with great endemism particularly among plant, primate, bird and insect species. However, with 70% of Brazil’s population living in or close by there is immense pressure to conserve the last remaining tracts.

The caatinga, a unique biome of semi-aid forest, cactus & scrubland country with more mammalian species than the Pantanal and its own endemism of birds with 23 species including Spix’s macaw that after a concerted reintroduction programme are again breeding in the caatinga of northern Bahia. A further 41 birds will be released in June 2025.

With around 7,400km of coastline Brazil also boasts some of the best beaches in the world but also reefs, mangroves and manatees.

When we look to wildlife there are figures that make Brazil highly worthy of consideration for a wildlife holiday.

The Pantanal, which is probably the most popular wildlife destination in Brazil, has 124 mammal species, 463 bird species, and 325 fish species. With a wide choice of activities from a variety of lodges the Pantanal offers some great wildlife experiences.

Looking at primate species alone, Brazil has 126 species, more than any other country and along with Madagascar, Indonesia and the DRC is critically important for primate conservation. Around 100 of these primate species (80%) inhabit the Amazon rainforests the most of the remainder, the forests of the Mata Atlântica. We can create primate specific itineraries for those interested in primate watching holidays.

18% of the world’s bird species have been recorded in Brazil. Of these 1,970+ species across all biomes 293 are endemic. Brazil also boasts 27 RAMSAR sites. As such it is an excellent destination for birdwatching holidays.

Fortunately today in Brazil, despite an increasing population and pressures on the natural environment, there are a growing number of people and organisations committed to wildlife protection, nature conservation, research and sustainability,  as well as those incorporating community involvement in tourism. Additionally, a modern flight network makes travel at times seamless between destinations.

With our access to highly skilled guides it is now time to seriously consider Brazil for a hugely diverse and rewarding wildlife holiday. Let us take you there.
