New Zealand

Maori legend says that the islands of New Zealand were hauled from the ocean depths like a giant fish and whilst New Zealand may be small in stature it offers a wealth of natural attractions on a vast scale. Using our knowledge and expertise here at Wildlife & Wilderness we are delighted to bring you a unique programme that showcases the many-coloured lands of this incredible country. We specialise in sharing with you the very best wildlife and wilderness experiences and have sought out some of the finest guides, boasting unsurpassed local knowledge, to enhance your time in New Zealand.

From the tip of the North Island Cape Reinga, to the wildlife sanctuary of Stewart Island on the southern shores of the South Island we have researched the best possible wildlife and wilderness experiences available.

The North Island offers a dramatic landscape of geothermal activity, sub-tropical rainforest and sweeping beaches. The panoramas are punctuated with the severed cones of volcanoes, which provide their own unique eco-systems. Birdlife is prolific and highlights include the Miranda Shorebird Centre, en route to the magnificent Coromandel, Hawkes Bay where over 7,000 breeding pairs of Australasian gannets nest at Cape Kidnappers and Kapiti Island, one of the best places to see the little spotted kiwi in their natural environment.

The landscape of the South Island changes from the gentle rolling vineyards of Marlborough and Nelson to the jagged peaks of the Southern Alps, which stretch like a backbone along the length of the island. On the east coast the nutrient-rich waters of Kaikoura are a natural playground for a diverse range of spectacular marine life including dolphins, whales, orca, fur seals, penguins and an abundance of pelagic birds including many species of albatross. Further south the Otago Peninsula is also home to a rich variety of marine life including the rare yellow-eyed penguin. From here the wild, unspoilt coastline of the beautiful Catlins is just a short drive and a must for any nature lover. Stewart Island, perched off the very southern tip of the South Island offers some of the best land and sea birding experiences to be had anywhere in New Zealand and is home to the Stewart Island brown kiwi. In total contrast the West Coast of New Zealand offers ancient glaciers, grinding relentlessly towards the ocean, primeval rainforests and wild beaches. Further south the coastline becomes torn by the fingers of Fiordland National Park where deep fiords ravaged by the forces of mother-nature have been carved into the landscape.

You can travel throughout New Zealand in style and comfort, enjoying renowned hospitality, sensational food and wine, world-class encounters with wildlife and discovering the beauty of the wilderness that abounds. Whether you want a private heli tour to remote and seemingly inaccessible locations, hiking tours through pristine wilderness, a leisurely self-drive exploration staying in boutique accommodation through areas filled with rare birdlife or private guided touring experiences that are second to none we look forward to helping you discover the natural beauty of New Zealand.
