As described in the Introduction, Makgadikgadi Pan is a special place and in the grasslands and bush surrounding pan you may find brown hyena, oryx and zebra as well as the extremely characterful meerkats. These habituated wild animals go about their daily routine and give you an insight into their group dynamics as they warm up and begin foraging at the beginning of the day. To walk with a wild animal without interfering is a moving experience.
From truly wild experiences in the Kalahari your safari moves into the riches of the Okavango Delta where superlatives become clichés in this wetland habitat that is home to some of the most incredible wildlife in Africa.
Rather than rush from location to location we believe you need to take your time and explore the Okavango Delta to really understand its wealth of nature and the value of conservation of this land. This Botswana safari itinerary will give you 3 nights in 2 different camps, preferably a water based camp where permanent waters are almost guaranteed. Here you can enjoy mokoro, dug-out canoe, rides to experience the smaller creatures viewed up close, encounter rarer species such as sitatunga and enjoy bird watching and simply relaxing as these excursions are a slow safari through the wilderness.
Additionally, you should also enjoy the attributes of a land based camp where activities are more usual, game drives and possibly short bush walks. Huge herds of buffalo may be encountered and with many prey species the larger predators, lion, leopard and cheetah are often present. With the right camp wild dogs can often be found too.
The only other consideration when further designing your safari from this suggested itinerary is to determine whether you should stay longer in any particular camp. Many of our clients will enjoy 4 nights or more in some camps, often returning year upon year.
