After a few days in Auckland, the 'City of Sails', head north to explore the beguiling islands and coves in the Bay of Islands before crossing to wild beaches and ancient kauri forests that tumble down the west coast of Northland.

Get insider information as you circumnavigate the Coromandel Peninsula with expert guides, a place treasured by the kiwis as a local haunt and awash with pristine beaches, solitude, magnificent coastal scenery and ancient kauri trees. The two coastlines are dramatically different. On the west, steep cliffs and hills drop sharply to the sea and a narrow strip of land flares into life from November to December each year as the Pohutukawa trees erupt into blossom. The east coast is a land of sweeping white beaches pounded by relentless surf.

From here head inland to Rotorua, regarded by many as the cultural heartbeat of the nation and remarkable for the ever visible geothermal activity.

Kapiti Island just offshore from the Kapiti Coast is one of our favourite places in New Zealand. Protected as an internationally renowned sanctuary for native birds, forest and the island is also a designated New Zealand wildlife and marine reserve. An overnight stay here gives you the rare opportunity to see the little spotted kiwi in its natural habitat.

Last but by no means least, end your North Island explorer with a few nights in the 'coolest little capital in the world'. Set betwixt rolling green hills and a sparkling harbour Wellington is compact, easy to get around and known for its love of the arts, culture, natural beauty and coffee!
