Beyond the coastal banana plantations of the mid-Caribbean coast you will take a high speed boat up the river and canal system to the isolated and laid back village of Tortuguero. The beaches here are famous for turtles as this is the most important nesting site in the western half of the Caribbean for green turtles whilst leatherback and hawksbill may also be seen. Behind the beaches is a system of large water channels and protected forest which with around 11 different habitats means it is an extremely diverse area supporting a wide range of faunal species. You will explore the park by boat along the channels.

Inland you reach the Sarapiqui region with its rainforest where guides will explain the ecology, flora and fauna. Higher up in the beautiful, quiet cloudforest of Los Quetzales National Park you can enjoy a guided hike from the deep green valley in search of birds, in particular the resplendent quetzal and other trogons. We have also included a longer nature hike down through various ecosystems that will really bring your understanding of this valley to life. Then it is time to drop to the Pacific Coast near Dominical. This region of the coast is protected to help conserve cetaceans, in particular the humpback whales that meet here, but other species including dolphins are often seen too.

Finally before returning to San Jose for departure, this Costa Rica holiday ends with 3 days of nature activities at Corcovado on the Osa Peninsula which has a intense wealth of biodiversity. Jaguar and tapir can still be found here among 140 species of mammals, birdlife is of course abundant and there is an astounding variety of flora including approximately 500 tree species. This remarkable destination is the perfect way to end this tour diagonally across Costa Rica.
