A slow safari in raw nature, a walking safari is the best way to appreciate more of Africa

This safari holiday can be re-designed and tailor-made for your own unique experience

Introduction

Walking safaris were pioneered by Norman Carr in South Luangwa and there is no better place for this  experience, whichever side of the Luangwa Valley you walk. The northern area of this national park provides tremendous opportunities for walking safaris with overnight camps and sleepouts pre-planned. Your understanding of the natural history of Zambia will be enriched to a different level by some of the best guides in Africa.

You will find many predators and a concomitant amount of prey species but you will also learn about the smaller details in the African bush that can only be found by walking, a true slow safari in the raw wild.

Get out of the vehicle, put on your walking boots and get set to immerse yourself in the wonders of the Africa.

South Luangwa is one of the jewels of Zambia's national parks network. Extending down much of the Luangwa Valley it offers a number of remote bush camps that provide outstanding wildlife watching opportunities and safari experiences including walking safaris and sleep-outs under the stars in unspoiled wilderness.

This page is an overview of options for bush walks in South Luangwa, the birthplace of walking safaris. These safaris are typically from a single overnight up to 5 or 6 nights on trails between camps already set up. Guided by some of the best guides in Africa and certainly by walking specialists you are sure to gain greater respect for the nature of the park.

Camps are set up in advance and you carry only a light sac, camera, binoculars etc. The journeys are often no more than 10km per day at a relaxed pace with stops for interesting sightings and breaks in the bush. Walking brings a small group closer together too, something you cannot experience so much from a vehicle; perhaps it is because your senses are heightened so much when you are on your feet passing through the land of large mammals and fine predators.
