Looking for a short safari break? This Indian wildlife holiday in the heart of the country is ideal.
After a connection through Delhi you will arrive in the morning into Nagpur from where it is just a couple of hours by road to Pench National Park. After some time to relax over lunch you will head out on a game drive in the afternoon. Pench is a very scenic park of undulating hills covered in teak and sal forests interspersed here and there with the characteristic ghost or kullu tree. Towards the Pench River, from which the park gets its name, there are some open grasslands where chital abound, gaur are present too in the park and it is this abundance of prey species that ensures the presence of tiger and leopard. Wild boar and a wide variety of other wildlife are also present here. Bird species are hugely diverse and include crimson-breasted barbet and racket-tailed drongo amongst about 200 recorded species.
A delightful journey through villages and forests brings you to Kanha National Park and another comfortable stay in a small camp or lodge. Kanha is perhaps India's best wildlife reserve and certainly a great place for observing tigers. However, the park was initially created for the protection of barasingha or swamp deer. This sprawling park covers a wide range of habitats across the Maikal Hills and you will find many species of ungulates, sometimes in large herds and many prey species too. Bird life is prolific with more than 350 species recorded including the beautiful paradise flycatcher. Three full days on safari among the hills and valleys and grassy plateau will ensure you have some great safari experiences, particularly as we choose to use quieter accommodation away from the main tourist haunts.
All too soon it will be time to return to Nagpur for your departure flight but this short safari is sure to have you longing for an extended wildlife holiday in India next time.
