Kibale Forest is primate hot spot with 12 species in the national park and as many as 6 or 7 species including red-tailed monkeys can be seen within just a short distance along the road from the park headquarters. For lovers of primates there is the incredible opportunity to spend a day with chimps habituating them as they travel through the forest. Alternatively enjoy an hour observing our close cousins. There are an estimated 1500 individual chimpanzees in the forests here.

A short distance south is Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kyambura Game Reserve. The latter has a small population of chimpanzees. Take time out to relax on a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel with its hippos and diverse bird species.

Then you move on through the mountains to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for a day gorilla trekking, another of the highlights of this safari holiday. Occassionally, as has happened to us you can also view gorillas from your accommodation at Bwindi.

Crossing the border you enter Rwanda for the short journey to Kinigi and Volcanoes National Park. Another gorilla trek awaits and can be quite a different experience to Bwindi. A final morning trekking for golden monkeys at a lower altitude rounds out this primate safari before heading for departure from the capital, Kigali.

Departure Dates

Any date to your requirements

Difficulty

Potentially muddy trails to see gorillas and trekking can be strenuous. Chimp tracking is generally on easier ground.

Flights

Some direct flights to Entebbe and Kigali from the UK  or via hubs in Europe & via Nairobi with Kenya Airways.

Time

GMT +2 hours

Consider starting in Budongo, further north than Kibale for more chimpanzee tracking.

Additionally you could add Nyungwe National Park in southern Rwanda where chimp tracking is possible, albeit often on steep ground; and where large troops of black & white colobus monkeys congregate. L'Hoest's monkey is also prevalent here.
