The best accommodation close to the wetlands of Palo Verde National Park. Rancho Humo is set on a private estancia transformed to a nature conservancy. Sabaneros are the norm in this part of the world as this is cattle country for the most part. However, Rancho Humo sets itself aside with its protected wetlands that are home to thousands of birds and importantly it is a safe haven for endangered jabiru stork. Up to 30 gather here in season and on our visit we saw 8 which is makes it unique in Costa Rica.
The hotel is a stylish boutique new build on an old site at the top a knoll. There are just 8 suites all in a contemporary style with private views to the woodlands and hills beyond. There is a beautiful pool deck for relaxing between activities. Dining is either on the terrace or more formally in the dining room. Staff are very pleasant and this makes for a relaxed stay off the beaten track.
Activities here include boat trips on the Tempisque River to the heronry and 'crocodile' island and bird watching drives through the wetlands in a converted old Series LandRover. The guides know their wildlife here and are locals who can take you into the village or for walks through the woodland.
