Glass Rooms in Finnish Lapland

Lapland offers many reasons to visit but top of the list for many people is to experience the Northern Lights. This 'bucket list' dream is now so popular that in order maximize aurora viewing opportunities the Finns have created some ingenious and rather unique accommodations. Designed with warmth and comfort in mind, all offer a memorable experience whether you choose a stand-alone stay or combine with more traditional styled accommodation.

Finland's most famous Glass Igloos reside at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in the far north of Lapland. Perfectly formed and built from special thermal glass, you can spend a cosy night under the stars even in the depths of winter as you await the northern lights to dance. The small igloo's feature a toilet and basin, whilst the larger igloos include shower facilities. Also at Kakslauttanen, you will find the Kelo Glass Igloo's, combining the warmth and comfort of a traditionally built log cabin with the unique luxury and sensational views of an adjoining glass igloo bedroom.

A more affordable option comes under the guise of 'Aurora Glamping'.  Aurora Huts offer a unique haven of warmth and comfort providing the ultimate glamping experience on the shores of Lake Torassieppi or Lake Jerisjärvi, with uninterrupted views of the northern night skies.  These glass igloos boast a comfortable double bed to ensure a good nights sleep, whilst the energy efficient heating will keep you toasty. Complete with an eco-friendly composting toilet and a water point, guests also have use of the full bathroom facilities and saunas located nearby.

A more luxurious option is available in the same location, on the shores of Lake Jerisjärvi, at the Arctic Firefox Lodge. Here, a private sauna enjoys panoramic views across the lake and upstairs you can admire views to the northern skies through the apex glass ceiling.

The perfect choice for honeymooners is the truly stunning Eagles View Suite that sits atop of Hotel Iso Syote.  This spacious suite is divided over two floors and really is the hotels crowning glory.  The separate living room has a glass facade and cosy fireplace, whilst the en-suite boasts a private sauna.  A spiral staircase takes up to the nest like bedroom with a unique round bed surrounded by glass walls and ceiling offering unspoilt views to the the surrounding nature.

For a longer stay under a glass ceiling head to the countryside setting of Iisakki Glass Village on the shores of Lake Rukajärvi.  Here you will find just 10 Glass Villas, each equipped with a double bed, en suite bathroom and a small kitchenette, all featuring floor to ceiling windows and a glass roof with spectacular views to the outside world and northern skies.

Wilderness Hotel Nellim is home to the exclusive Aurora Bubble, a cosy heated wooden pod complete with a domed perspex roof angled towards the north with privacy assured. Located within the hotel grounds they are close to lodge facilities but far enough away from any artificial light to ensure the best views of the Arctic night skies. The simplistic design features a small porch and discrete eco-toilet and with a comfortable bed positioned beneath the domed ceiling. With the same northern vistas, a little more space is offered in the Aurora Kota, along with a more traditional design inspired by the Sámi hut.  Larger still, Aurora Cabins complete with en suite facilities can be found at sister properties Wilderness Hotels Nangu and Muotka. The north facing Aurora Cabins sleep up to 4 people so are ideal for families and feature a laser-heated glass-roof directly above the bed for fabulous views to the northern night sky, some even boast their own private sauna.

Further south, yet still 100km north of the Arctic Circle, in the small village of Luosto you will find 10 more beautifully designed Arctic accommodations. Located in the grounds of Hotel Aurora the air-conditioned Glass Igloos feature a private bathroom with toilet and shower and boast quality hotel amenities. Available year-round these stunning rooms provide a unique opportunity to experience amazing auroras in both autumn and winter or sleep under the Midnight Sun during the summer months.

Rovaniemi is the Capital of Lapland and within easy reach, yet far removed from the hustle and bustle, you will find the stunning Arctic Treehouse Hotel. Nestled in a forest setting, right on the Arctic Circle, this luxurious Nordic designed hotel features guest accommodations with panoramic floor to ceiling windows. The pod-like Treehouse Suites are positioned on stilts with spectacular views over the treetops, whilst the larger Arctic Glass Houses boast an elevated position complete with terrace. The spacious ArcticScene Executive Suites are an utter indulgence with a separate wellness area with scenery sauna and bath where you may enjoy the surrounding forest through the floor-to-ceiling windows made using the latest privacy-valuing technology.

Similar in style and also close to the Arctic Circle are the Panorama Huts at Vaattunki Wilderness ResortFor couples or smaller families of three, the Panorama Huts offer an intimate space for relaxation and the modern Lappish interior features a huge panoramic window, connecting you to Lapland’s nature and maximizing your chances to witness the northern lights.
