In the west of central Uganda at the southern end of Lake Albert lies Semliki Wildlife Reserve. The reserve is mostly savannah grassland dotted with borassus palms and interspersed with riverine forest. It is in one such wooded area that Semliki Safari Lodge is situated. A classic safari lodge of long standing and high quality, Semliki Safari Lodge has just 8 tents under thatch and overlooking the bush and grasslands. The main area is spacious yet homely and for those interested in birds or chimpanzees this is a good place to include on a safari in Uganda.
Shoebill storks are regularly seen in the swamps at the end of Lake Albert close by and boat trips can be taken on the lake. The lodge has also been long involved in a chimpanzee research project and guests can track chimps with a researcher. Ten years or so ago this pretty park a couple of hours from Fort Portal had little game. This has reversed in recent times with large numbers of Ugandan kob. Game drives and bush walks can be a rewarding experience and it is hoped that this reserve will eventually return to the incredibly high densities of wildlife that it once held.
