Backed by mountains and with excellent guided activities, the best way to experience the high country

Introduction

Wilderness Lodge Arthurs Pass is the sister property to Lake Moeraki and, in contrast to its sister’s coastal location, the lodge at Arthurs Pass boasts a spectacular alpine setting, high in the heart of the Southern Alps.  Owned and operated by the McSweeney-Saunders family, the lodges are at the forefront of eco-tourism and conservation within New Zealand.

The 2,400 hectares of nature reserve and working high-country merino sheep station allow access to a natural paradise of clear air, moss lined streams and spine-tingling panoramas, so escape the crowds and embark on exciting nature adventures at Wilderness Lodge Arthurs Pass.

With just 20 mountain view rooms and 4 alpine view lodges this retreat feels like a true wilderness escape. Mountain view rooms have expansive views over the Waimakriri River Valley to the mountains whilst the alpine view lodges are nestled amongst the sandstone rocks and mountain beech forest with beautiful views, spa baths and private decks. The complimentary nature activities included are a great introduction to the wildlife and ecology on the property and are led by knowledgeable guides. Meals are taken in the Mt. Rolleston restaurant, offering magnificent mountain views.

In additional there is an extensive network of self-guided walking trails along with optional guided wilderness adventures which include a hike through moss forest, giant red tussocks and alpine wetlands and lakes to a historic high shepherds hut, a walk of discovery to find the unique alpine flora and fauna which lies in a high basin beneath the slopes of Mt. Rolleston and a tour into the regions driest, desert-like landscapes.

Depending on the time available the lodge is also the perfect base from which to explore the Arthurs Pass National Park, Craigieburn Forest Park and Torlesse Conservation Park, and canoe trips are also available on Lake Pearson and Lake Sarah where sighting of the crested grebe, scaup, paradise ducks and other wetland birds are common.

As with Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki, you also have opportunity to book a day of private guiding.
