We would like to show you some of Costa Rica's secrets, off the beaten track destinations that will give you a quiet, slow-paced holiday but without forsaking the richness of the nature throughout the country. Towards the end we bring you to a choice of beach hotels on the Nicoya Peninsula for some downtime.
The cloudforests of the Poas Volcano area are where you will spend the first couple of nights. At altitude these cloudforests can be cool but there are some good walks and a variety of different birds to enjoy here.
Moving right away from the main tourist trails we take you north to Boca Tapada and a splendid lodge with treehouses located high in the rainforest. The wildlife in this undisturbed area is remarkable, coatis, agoutis, frogs, reptiles and a huge array of birds from hummingbirds to toucans, great green macaws and king vultures; all are testament to the undisturbed nature of the forests here.
Leaving the Caribbean lowlands you journey up to Tenorio Volcano to the north of the more famous Arenal Volcano. Tenorio National Park is a secluded park of primary rainforest with cloudforest topping its two volcanoes, Tenorio and Montezuma. The park has an excellent trail network and is best known for the waterfall plunging into a turquoise pool on the Rio Celeste. As expected there is a wealth of wildlife and around 300 bird species have been recorded but around 100 species can regularly be seen in a day's birding.
A cross country route brings you to the arid lowlands of Guanacaste. A wonderful boutique hotel provides an excellent base for a protected wetland that has a phenomenal density of bird life. River trips are also possible to view the caiman and heronry. After your stay here you head through cattle ranching country and more densely forested hills where monkeys and birds abound, to reach a quiet hotel close to the ocean. Your choice of accommodation will determine which beach on the peninsula you will visit. With few visitors to this area you can take your own time to explore your surroundings or relax in the forest or on a beach.
This suggested itinerary is just an example of possibilities available for trips to this area. Price is dependant on season, standard of accommodation and length of stay.
