If the wilder side of India is what you're after then look no further! The scenic banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River is the location of Kaziranga National Park. It is home to the magnificent one-horned rhinoceros, tigers and an incredible array of bird species with over 300 recorded and often very different to those seen in other parts of India.
Two-thirds of the world population of one-horned rhinoceros, almost 2000, live in Kaziranga and there are good chances to observe them among the long grasses by taking elephant-back safaris. They seem not to worry about tourist carrying elephants in their presence. They can also be observed in the riverine forest and these two habitats used to account for their range across much of northern India. This rhino is equivalent in size to Africa's white rhino and so well worth travelling to north-east India to observe.
Tigers survive in Kaziranga in good numbers as they are well protected, although less frequently encountered due to the habitat. Their presence is often noted with pug marks, tree scratching and kills. Elephants, sloth bear, barasingha or swamp deer, wild buffalo and the western hoolock gibbon are among other large species that can be seen. The latter ape is among the most endangered primates on earth due to its habitat destruction and in fact the world's first sanctuary named after a primate was created close to nearby Jorhat in 1997.
Besides elephant-back safaris that take place in the Central Range in the early mornings, game drives in the different sectors of Kaziranga offer you the best opportunities for view the wildlife.
This short extension can easily be extended as desired or incorporated into other itineraries in India and Bhutan.
