Another must for bird lovers this tour travels beyond the Cape Farewell Lighthouse to the sea level gannet colony. Farewell Spit Eco Tours are the only tour operator to have a licence granted by the Department of Conservation for this site, which is one of the newest nesting sites for gannets in New Zealand and visitor numbers are restricted to just 20 people per day so pre-booking is essential.
From the lighthouse it's a 20 minute walk across the flat expanse of sand to the end of the spit to view the nesting site. It is possible that you will get your feet wet as you will stop to observe the gannets, very often a two-way process as these birds are known for being inquisitive and will often fly low overhead for a better look! This spectacular sea bird usually selects rocky outcrops for breeding or nesting sites and this is the only gannet colony at sea level, therefore affording superb views of parents caring for their young and making this a must-do day trip for keen bird watchers.
