Expect the unexpected as you take the short drive from the centre of Auckland to explore the Waitakere Ranges. This is a place of sub-tropical rainforest, pounding surf, soaring cliffs and striking black-sand beaches.
First, make a stop at the Arataki Visitors Centre with it's dramatic panoramic views across the rainforest to both of Auckland’s harbours. Home to traditional Māori carvings, your guide will explain their significance for the area before taking you on a rainforest walk to find shy bush-dwelling birds and learn a little of the huge significance that the indigenous plants and trees have to the Maori people; in fact many of these plants are still used today. After experiencing the beauty of Piha Beach and the Tasman Sea from a viewing platform, head down to the sands and breathe in the sea air, relish the sound of the ocean waves in your ears and feel the spray of the surf as you stroll along the deserted shore.
During the afternoon enjoy a New Zealand style afternoon tea with cookies, manuka honey and tea, coffee or juice.
Small group touring, pick up and return from central Auckland hotels, guiding and refreshments are included.
