The largest and most popular beach location of the Tanzania coastline is the island of Zanzibar. Mystery, magic and the exotic have always seemed synonymous with the name where white beaches lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, stunning marine life, spice plantations and the bustling labyrinth alleys of Stone Town all await. If you still need your fix of wildlife, head for Jozani Forest, home to the red colobus monkey and other species of monkey, birds and butterflies. Swim amongst the Mangrove swamps, wander through the remains of bygone Sultans' palaces, drift into the sunset on a dhow cruise or simply find your own stretch of pristine beach and watch the stars.
Alternative smaller, exclusive island options are Pemba and Mafia. These are more remote destinations for those really looking to get away from it all and enjoy the isolation. Equally as nice are the smaller resorts on the mainland coast that are within a short drive or flight from Dar es Salaam.
