Description

With it's distinctive culture moulded by the ever present sea and made famous in the book, The Shipping News, our tour of Newfoundland is sure to cast a spell on those venturing there.

Starting in Halifax you will make a brief stop in Sydney on Cape Breton Island before cruising on the ferry the historic route to the old fishing village of Port aux Basques. From here you will make your way north and to the west coast. Here in the mountainous wilderness of Gros Morne National Park you can walk and keep an eye out for moose and bears along the way.

You may wish to venture north to the ancient Viking site of L'anse Aux Meadows, the earliest known settlement of Europeans in the Americas. Here you can stay in the lighthouse on Quirpon Island.

Discover the numerous rocky inlets and offshore islands around Twillingate. Take a boat excursion and get up close to 10,000 year old glacial giants as you cruise the iceberg corridor in search of humpback, minke and fin whales. The sight of breaching humpbacks and huge icebergs that have calved from Greenland and the Arctic islands is truly memorable.

After exploring the excellent walking trails of Terra Nova National Park your journeys continues to the capital St. John's, one of North America's oldest cities. Further opportunities to observe whales present themselves here alongside a visit to North America's largest Atlantic puffin colony before returning to Nova Scotia on an overnight ferry crossing.

This east coast adventure will ensure you experience the remarkable wilderness along remote, secluded routes, with easy access from spring through to autumn. As important as any wildlife sightings is the pure wilderness of Newfoundland and it peoples that hold a seemingly tenuous grip on life in this wild place.
