Description

This comprehensive bird and nature photography tour in Northern Ostrobothnia and South Lapland is made for nature lovers!

In the company of an experienced guide you will visit wide-ranging bird sites, from wonderful old spruce forests to hills, wetlands, lakes and riversides. You will photograph birds and wildlife from the hiking trails in the wilderness, from the hides made for professional photographers, single or twin bird photography tents and bird-watching towers. The Wolf, bear and eagle hides are solid wooden hides with photography tables where you can attach your ball head or gimbal.

Your adventure begins in Syöte-Salmitunturi, one of the most important areas of boreal forest in the North-Ostrobothnia region.  This is an important breeding area for boreal avifauna including Picoides tridactylus, Eurasian three-toed Woodpecker, Tetrao urogallus, Eurasian capercaillie, Tarsiger cyanurus, red-flanked bluetail, Perisoreus infaustus, Siberian jay, Parus cinctus, Siberian tit, and Pinicola enucleator, Pine grosbeak.  Here, accommodation is arranged in KIDE Hotel or at base camp, Taigalampi Cabin, with all the amenities you will need.

Your journey will then take you to the eastern part of Finland, said to be one of Finland's last wilderness areas.  It is in this wilderness area, you will find all four of Finland’s predators; wolverine, bear, wolf, and lynx. The American beaver (formerly the Canadian beaver) is also familiar in the area and the species of birds are abundant. Among the birds of prey, the hawk family is represented by the bee eagle, the sparrow hawk, and the barn owl. Other owls include the sparrow owl and the boreal owl. In the bogs, you can see whooper swan and Martinselkonen's most common big waterbird might be a wild goose that nests and hides in remote ponds.

At Martinselkonen you really are outside of everything, and part of nature, as it was intended. Watery bogs and small ponds, old-growth forest and moss-covered spruces can be discovered as you explore by walking along marked trails, before taking a refreshing break by a campfire. Your base here will be Arola Farm and eagle and bear watching are high on the agenda before moving on to Kuhmo and Kuikka Base Camp in Kuhmo for wolves, eagles, wolverines and more bears.

Your journey comes to an end at Liminka Bay, close to Oulu Airport. Liminka Bay is an internationally significant resting and nesting site for migratory birds and a meeting place for many northern and southern bird species.
