During this small group tour, enjoy the company of like-minded travellers whilst staying at a cosy base camp in Eastern Finland. Hone your wilderness and photographic skills as you search for local wildlife and seek the northern lights, capturing them both on camera. During your stay, feast on tasty home cooked fare and delicious campfire lunches, sauna like a Fin and brave the ice hole, if you dare! Welcome to the Arctic!
Your first evening will be spent in Lentiira in the company of Rob Johnstone, a Scottish-born professional astronomer and worldwide recognized astronomy educator. He will take you on a fascinating journey from solar wind to northern lights and if conditions are right, you may capture some amazing images with his expert guidance.
After a cosy night at Hotel Kalevala you will transfer to Kuikka Base Camp in Kuhmo for the remainder of your stay. From here, in the company of an experienced local photography guide, you will spend the first few days tracking and observing the local winter wildlife around the Kuhmo region. Snowshoe to a frozen lake for ice fishing and venture by back-country forest skis into the Elimyssalo Nature Reserve to explore the old growth forest where wolves, wild reindeer, elk and even the elusive lynx, reside. As night falls there will be opportunities to seek and photograph the northern lights by frozen lake.
During this fantastic trip, 2-nights will be spent in the warmth and comfort of a cosy wildlife observation hide, in the heart of the forest, perfectly positioned to observe and photograph the local wolf pack that have made this region their home. Eagles and wolverine also frequent the area, so it’s an opportunity not to be missed.
Back at base camp, your final day is dedicated to processing some of your best images before introducing them on the big screen during a final showcase presentation.
